How are Green Chemistry and Greener Chemistry Associates Related?
Green Chemistry is now a minor branch of the study of chemistry and is in practice throughout the world. It was created to create a series of guidelines chemists can use in their work, especially for product formulators. The time to “build greener chemical products” is when they are created.
I became familiar with the principles about 15 years ago and immediately began to use them in my work and to talk about them with associates in the company and friends in the industry. Utilization of green chemistry has grown dramatically since it began.
Seven years ago, I went through a transition to a 2nd career and began Greener Chemistry Associates to be my way of sharing the science. During this time I’ve discovered that they are meaningful to a much broader audience that I first thought.
For example, one principle is to “prevent waste not treat it.” Moving into a much more sustainable world and way of life implies all waste, not just chemical waste.
In future posts, I plan to write about how the products of companies represented by GCA are contributing to preventing and reducing waste, whether the application is cleaning solvents in industry or food scraps in food service operations.
With the increased legislation on the state level in the U.S., waste recycling has become a big business and has taken its place in our society.
Recycling should not have to be mandated by law, but simply by common sense.
The latest trend to supplement recycling is diverting food waste from the solid waste, so it is no longer sent to landfills. Food waste has value as a soil nutrient as the metal content does in an empty aluminum can.
Commercial composting facilities are being started to produce and market a beneficial product out of garbage. It’s nothing new since rural communities have been doing it for generations.
Now infrastructure is falling into place in the largest cities in America with San Francisco and New York taking the lead. Soon it will become another way of more sustainable living for everyone.
